Wal-Mart stores
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is an American public corporation that was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton.
Headquarted in Bentonville, Arkansas, USA, Wal-Mart is known as the largest retailer in the world and the second largest corporation in the world, after Exxon Mobil and the largest private employer in the United States and Mexico, having 1.8 millions of employees in 2006. Wal-Mart is also the largest grocery retailer in the United States and the largest toy seller in the United States.
Wal-Mart started as the original Walton's Five and Dime, a new variety store in Bentonville that achieved a high sales volume by selling products with slightly smaller markups than most competitors. Because of this success, Sam Walton opened in 1962, the first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas, named Wal-Mart Discount City. Five years later the company had 24 stores in the state of Arkansas, reaching $12.6 million in sales.
The company opened stores outside of Arkansas soon after and in 1969, it was incorporated as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. during the 1980s and 1990s, Wal-Mart grew very fast, with many discount stores, grocery stores and hypermarkets operating in Mexico as Walmex, in the United Kingdom as ASDA and in Japan as The Seiyu Co. Ltd.
